Session #10: Turtle Time

Back in Superior City, there's something going on at the Ninja Pizzeria. The main room is dominated by a large ring-like device that bears an uncanny resemblance to a portal from an old sci-fi movie and subsequent TV series. The Turtle Ninjas are gathered together, with a couple of their human friends; they've rigged up a portal that - it is said - will provide them with a way to escape from this "alternate dimension" and get back to their home in New York City. Off to the side, several superheroes watch, including "Team Neko" (a group of six "anime cat-girls" in costumes that look something like Japanese schoolgirl uniforms), the Screamer, and the Raven. Ace reporter Darla Dazzle is on the scene with her cameraman, reporting that several heroes of Superior City have gathered together to help the Turtle Ninjas return to their home. The gate is suddenly filled with a glowing, watery field of energy, and the large rat-man that serves as the mentor for the group steps up to it. He urges the Turtle Ninjas to follow him, "for we have not much time before our enemies try to stop us!" - and then he passes through. On the other side, the Turtle Ninjas can see, dimly, an image of the streets of New York in mid-day, and their master standing on the other side, waving amiably. (None of them bother to give pause to the thought that, despite all their usual efforts to remain incognito, to hide in sewers or disguise their identities, their master is standing out in broad daylight in New York City, and isn't causing a panic. They're just too focused on getting home.)

One of the Turtles - Mikey - isn't quite so sure about all this. For one thing, he doesn't exactly remember how he got here. The last thing he knew, he was at the Iron Citadel, with Iron Angel, Crimson Hunter, and his new friends, and there was some business about getting "deleted", and that weird appearance by Morpheus and the whole "There's no place like home" stunt. Now, he's here in this weird "pizzeria", surrounded by his brothers; at least they aren't trying to sell pizza off like last time. Naturally, he asks what's going on. The presence of one of the Guardian Muses - standing in the corner, and ignored by everyone - isn't exactly encouraging.

Mikey gets the story that Shredder was responsible for sending the Turtles and their friends to an alternate dimension, in order to get them out of the way. The story seems a bit flimsy and loose on the specifics; somehow, various villains here in Superior City are in kahoots with Shredder, and it's presumed that they're going to make an attempt to stop the Turtles from escaping. Even worse, he hears, the so-called "Heroes 'R' Us" team has gone bad; the Raven receives a "mental sending" that they're on their way to disrupt the attempt of the Turtles to flee.

Meanwhile, Donny (the mechanical genius of the group) works on powering the gate back up to allow the others to go through - and then, there are several flashes and puffs of smoke, and the room is filled with ninjas of the Foot Clan - plus an assortment of unsavory martial artist types, and the sinister Madame X. Madame X makes a cliche speech about how the Turtles will never escape, et cetera, et cetera, but she's just about drowned out by too-loud "action music" piping over the sound system, and the noise of Mikey arguing with his friends about whether or not the "Heroes 'R' Us" team should be called "Villains 'R' Us".

One of the ninjas attacks Darla Dazzle's cameraman, sending him crashing to the floor. Darla Dazzle starts screaming incoherently. The ninjas attack members of Team Neko, but they leap and bounce out of the way, performing various stunts to make themselves hard to hit. Shuriken fly, as the Turtles leap into action to fight the Foot. In the initial attack, though, the Raven spends too much time on a dramatic monologue before springing into action - and he is taken out by several shuriken. "No fair!" protests Raven, as he falls. "Bye bye, birdie!" Mikey quips, as he proceeds to fight the ninjas. The Turtles spring into action, as Donny tries to defend the controls of the portal from the ninjas, Leo calls out directions to the others, and Raph charges wontonly into the fray to defend the honor of the cat-girls. Mikey performs various stunts and pranks to distract the ninjas and keep them off-balance.

"Eat bo-staff!" Donny cries, as he slams one of the ninjas with his weapon.

"Bo staff! Full of fiber!" Mikey quips, whereupon Donny starts arguing with him about butting in on his one-liners.

Casey runs up to the ninjas - "Fore!" - and starts smacking them around.

April helps out by grabbing everything at hand - light fixtures, pizza boxes, dinnerware - and chucking it at ninjas. When she runs out of "ammunition", and sees that Darla is still just screaming uselessly, she picks up the camera. "This is April O'Neil, reporting live!" It looks like the Turtles are handling the ninjas fairly well, all things considered - and the members of Team Neko, it turns out, don't really require anyone to help them out. April starts giving some wry commentary on the scene, a few one-liners here and there as Foot ninjas get clobbered. Then, "Let's get some insight from Darla!" She turns the camera on Darla. SCREAM! "Back to you!"

Meanwhile, Leo and Donny have their hands full with a skull-masked ninja who is intent on destroying the controls to the portal; Donny can't power it back up while he's having to dodge ninja stars and blades. "Can we get some cat girls over here?" Leo calls out.

Meanwhile, Donny manages to get in a lucky smack on the skull-headed ninja. "You'll pay for that!" the ninja curses.

"I left my wallet in my other shell!" Donny quips back, following up with another smack.

Back across the room, April tries to slap some sense into Darla. "Get a hold of yourself, woman! You call yourself a news reporter?" Meanwhile, there's plenty of chatter over Darla's headset; it seems the ratings are going up!

"Put a sock in it, Foot!" Donny says, as he clobbers the skull-masked ninja. Similar groaner one-liners are tossed about (along with the occasional ninja), and it looks like things are going to wind down, and our Turtles will escape back to New York City - when Mikey hears some screeching tires outside. He looks, and it's the Coffeemobile: Warhawk, Crimson Hunter and Mysterio pile out, and rush for the building. Just then, a large saber-toothed feline - Kathmandu?! - leaps out and blocks the threesome. No, it's "Katmandu" (notice the slight difference in spelling), and he's not about to let these "villains" interrupt the Turtles' escape. Mikey overhears a disembodied voice - the voice of the Guardian Muse - warning Crimson Hunter and the others to stay out of this. "This is a sanctioned system plot. Do not interfere." However, it looks like interfering is exactly what they're intent on doing.

Another fight ensues at the entrance, in a three-way fight between Madame X and her ninjas, Katmandu, and the Heroes 'R' Us squad. Mikey rushes out; "Stop it! They're the good guys!" Warhawk goes down, and Mikey smacks Katmandu for it. At this, a couple of the cat-girls from Team Neko cry out in horror that Mikey would hit someone as cute as Katmandu - and they turn on Mikey! In the ensuing free-for-all, Crimson Hunter tries to get Mikey's attention; they haven't been formally introduced before, but he tries to let him know that he's trying to help Mikey and his friends. Mikey's friends have gone missing - and this whole business about the portal isn't meant to get the Turtles back to "New York" - it's a "plot" meant to give them an "exit story" ... whereupon they'll be deleted from Superior City. The portal will actually destroy any character that goes through it, "Crim" explains; the whole business about "going home" is just an attempt by Superior City's administrators to patch up a "happy ending" for the Turtles to please its players, and this whole plot is being held during a weekday, in the middle of the day, during a time of low player attendance, just to try to minimize interference from those who wouldn't play along.

Mikey is suddenly horrified at the realization that his master has ALREADY GONE THROUGH. He begins to wail in anguish, while Mysterio puts up a wall of flame to try to hold off the cat girls, and Crim pulls him back behind the barrier.

Back inside the restaurant, the ninjas are pretty much cleared out, save for a few hold-outs. Alas, Casey manages to get knocked out, and April abandons her camera to go rushing across the floor to assist him. She's more than a little perplexed when she finds that Momoironeko (a pink-haired cat girl) has already made it to Casey and is admiring his well-muscled unconscious form; April smacks her out of the way and tries to pull Casey over to a safer spot near one of the upended tables. Donny finally gets a chance to start open the gate - whereupon Leo makes a run for the gate, urging his brothers to do likewise.

Mikey is struck by sheer horror: his brother is about to leap through to certain doom! He cries out; Crimson Hunter uses his powersuit to grab Mikey, blast across the fiery shield, and shoot across the floor, up to the gate - but this isn't enough to stop Leo from making a last dash to the portal. So, Mikey takes a desperate measure - "I'm sorry about this, bro, but ..." - he smacks Leo, knocking him out cold, and then starts to drag him back. "He ain't heavy. He's my brother!" he quips - but nobody's laughing. The free-for-all resumes.

Mikey hands off Leo to Mysterio, and urges him to fly out with him - but Raphael intercepts him and batters him mercilessly, until Mysterio drops Leo and retreats, teleporting through a solid wall to get to the other side. Mikey tries to convince the others that they need to escape - that this is all just a trick of the Shredder. "But I'm missing Jeopardy!" Casey wails in a delirium, his head cradled in April's lap.

Crimson Hunter works furiously at the controls to the portal, but Donny and the others rush up to attack him; his talk about this being a portal to "certain doom" falls on deaf ears, as Donny takes offense at any suggestion that his creation wouldn't work as advertised. Mikey fends off the cat-girls to the best of his ability, until he falls unconscious - but, just as he's falling, he says something about wishing he were stronger - or at least, that's how Crimson Hunter hears it. Crimson Hunter is struck by inspiration: his power suit gives him super strength. Rather than trying to do everything in a nice, orderly fashion ... he could just use brute force! So, he rips up the gate, and flies for the entrance. This causes all direction to be focused on him, of course, as he smashes out the front door, shattering smiling fiberglass visages of smiling turtle ninjas, and knocking the neon signage askew. Raph is there, though, to intercept him.

Just then, Mr. Coffee shows up. "This looks like a job for caffeine!" But he's far too late to have any real impact on the outcome of the battle.

"You shouldn't hit me!" Crimson Hunter calls out. "If you do, my suit will be damaged enough to lose its super strength ... and I'll drop the portal!"

This gives Raph a momentary pause for thought, as he's hurtling through the air ... but Raph doesn't like pause for thought. Right now, he's ANGRY, and he very much wants to hit somebody. Crimson Hunter looks like a pretty good choice - and he just might be bluffing.

He isn't.

Raph makes a critical hit, knocking Crimson Hunter back with incredible force, sending the power-suited hero slamming back through the entrance. The huge ring gate is dropped, smashing into the wall and floor, sparking - and exploding. Mikey is dimly aware of the Guardian Muse crying out about a breach, a bug in the system, and, "We didn't account for this!" And then, "reality" sunders.

Everyone inside the pizzeria falls into the rift, and out of Superior City's constructed reality - save for the Guardian Muse, who blinks out of sight, and Mr. Coffee and one of the cat-girls (who just happened to be outside the range of the effect). They hurtle through space, with streams of energy soaring past them. Mikey focuses on the streams of energy and realizes that they represent data; they are somewhere "outside" Superior City, and instead of seeing representations of an artificial reality, they're seeing abstract representations of the code that makes up Universe. He tries to deliberately intercept one of the streams, and watches as, for a moment, his hand glows and then seems to dissolve into particles - but he quickly snatches his hand back and is relieved to see that it is whole and unaffected.

The cat-girls are all squealing and crying out; they cling to each other - and then, icons appear before them - "LOGOUT" - and they disappear from sight. Katmandu, Screamer and Raven all "LOGOUT" as well. Raph happens to be watching when this happens, and he is dumbfounded. He looks around himself and is struck by a realization: this isn't some "alternate dimension". It's an artificial reality. And somehow ... he isn't supposed to know this. He is struck by an immediate and excruciating headache.

The others who are hurtling through the space recover consciousness. Mikey calls out to Crimson Hunter, "Hey, can't you fly?"

"Yes, I can, but if I did, I wouldn't be keeping up with the rest of you."

After a bit, Mysterio appears, and he points out the fragmented portal ring, which is presently flipping end over end nearby. Each time it rotates around, a different scene shows through it. In one, there is some sort of mythic place of forest and Greek temple ruins, where there are satyrs and nymphs, in what looks like some sort of Bacchanal - not a sight for eyes of all ages. Casey cries out in alarm and amazement at the sight. Next, there is a scene that looks like a view somewhere in Superior City, but it's night, and it's creepy, and there is a crowd of shambling forms (zombies?) moving about. In another scene, there's what looks like a German hamlet. In another, there is a cloudy sky, and some fighter planes (circa World War II?) flying by. In another, there is a scene of a corridor in some decrepit space station, with blast marks and sprays of acid visible on the walls. More scenes pass by. Mikey sees, briefly, a scene that seems to show some fantasy world - a village in such a place - and on the street, he sees a girl in a white trenchcoat, with white poofy hair - Voltage! But before he can do anything about it, the broken portal flips again and the scene changes.

Mikey calls out for the others to gather around and link hands. Despite the free-for-all, everyone is too bewildered to argue. They join hands like a parachuting stunt team, and Mysterio and Crimson Hunter start steering them toward the portal. Mikey watches it rotate, until he sees another glimpse of that fantasy world where he thought he saw Voltage - then, he gives the word - and they go through!

There's another explosion, as they manage to knock a few of the fragments of the portal while bumping through. Some of the ring fragments go through the portal.

This can't be good.

So, where will our heroes end up? Will they ever see Superior City again? Find out next time, in the next exciting session of ... Superior City!
