Quarren

Quarren Entertainer In the post-Imperial era, there is some dispute over the origins of the Quarren. One story has it that the Quarren hail from Calamar, and that they had an at times fractious relationship with the Mon Calamari, who also come from that world. When the Mon Calamari developed an interest in space travel, the conservative and isolationist Quarren were disinterested, and when the Mon Calamari made contact with the Empire, and brought on an Imperial invasion, not only did the Quarren fail to assist the Mon Calamari, but, it is said, they even helped the Empire bypass Mon Calamari defenses, in an act of sabotage. Only when the Empire began to enslave both Mon Calamari and Quarren did the Quarren assist the Mon Calamari in driving off the Imperials with relatively primitive weaponry. After that time, some of the Quarren did indeed leave Calamar, spreading out to other parts of the galaxy.

Other accounts dispute this origin -- that there was actually a Quarren member of the Senate, long before the Empire ever came into being, and that Quarren were seen on such remote and unlikely worlds as Tatooine.

Whatever the truth, Quarren are not found in great numbers in the galaxy at large, and tend to be fairly quiet and solitary.

Personality: Generally quiet and contemplative, rarely given to banter or heated arguments. Often conservative and solitary, not given to taking wild risks.

Physical Description: Quarren are amphibious humanoid aliens most visually notable for their heads, which have an elongated, tapered braincase, visible gills, and four nearly vestigial tentacles sprouting from each side of the "beaked" mouth. The skin of Quarren varies in color, ranging from steel grey to bleach white, muddy brown to seafoam, bright red to salmon pink, with varying mottles, spots and/or stripes. Otherwise human-like hands have two fingers and a thumb, each digit ending in a suction cup. Adult Quarren stand between 1.4 to 1.9 meters tall, and smell of brine.

Quarren Homeworld: Apparently Calamar, but there is speculation that they may have other-worldly origins.

Language: Quarren have their own language, though some learn Basic and Calamarian.

Example Names: Tessek, Kleshess

Adventurers: On the world of Calamar, there is some friction between the Mon Calamari and the Quarren, as while the Mon Calamari have adapted fairly high technology even before the arrival of Imperial scouts, the Quarren have remained in a fairly primitive sub-oceanic lifestyle. Rightly or wrongly, some Quarren feel oppressed by the more successful Mon Calamari. In the period of the Galactic Civil War, some of the Quarren have aligned themselves more strongly with the Empire -- a young Quarren may have been eager for a chance to find better fortunes on other worlds, even if it means suffering the anti-alien sentiments of the Empire.

In the New Republic era, the Mon Calamari play a significant role in the galaxy, thus perhaps opening the door to a dissatisfied Quarren to seek his or her fortunes off-world. In the pre-Empire era, the world of Calamar hasn't been "discovered" yet, but perhaps the Quarren have suffered a "diaspora" from their original, now-forgotten homeworld, and can be found in small remnants, wandering the galaxy.

Quarren Species Traits

  • -2 Strength, +2 Dexterity. The skeleton of a Quarren has a large amount of cartilage in it, making the body very limber, but at the expense of body strength.
  • Medium-size. As Medium-size creatures, Quarren have no special bonuses or penalties due to their size.
  • Quarren base speed is 10 meters.
  • Amphibious. As amphibious creatures, Quarren can breathe either air or water normally. They also have a +4 species bonus on Swim checks.
  • Low-Light Vision. Quarren can see twice as far as a Human in dim light (such as moonlight or underwater). They retain the ability to distinguish color and detail under these conditions.
