Player Handout: Doc Holliday

Doc Holliday
1852-1887

Doctor John H. "Doc" Holliday was born the son of a Confederate Army major in Valosta, Georgia in 1852, and trained to become a dentist at the medical college in Baltimore. A family doctor diagnosed him as only having four years to live, so he left his schooling and started to wander his way westward, through Texas. For a while, he practiced as a dentist in Dallas, but he had a knack for gravitating toward saloons and gambling halls, and getting into trouble. After he killed a couple of gamblers in Dallas, he moved on, working teeth along the way, and constantly drinking and gambling ... and occasionally shooting down or knifing men over gambling disputes. He picked up a wife along the way, popularly known as "Big Nosed Kate". She wasn't highly regarded for her looks, but she was known to have saved his life more than once -- in one instance liberating him after he shot a man in Fort Griffin by setting fire to a building and having horses ready for his escape.

Eventually, he met up with Wyatt Earp in Dodge City, where Earp was Marshal, and helped out in a shootout in the Long Branch Saloon. Eventually, he headed off with Wyatt Earp and his brother's family for Tombstone, Arizona on a caravan in September of 1879. There, in Tombstone, she had a falling out with Doc, and went about town, drunk, telling everyone that Doc had robbed a stagecoach. According to accounts, he grabbed her and told her that if he had actually robbed it, he would have taken all the gold instead of bungling the job. When she sobered up, she told the judge she had lied, and Doc sent her off with some money ... and a promise that he would kill her if she ever came back to Tombstone. She was never seen or heard from again.

Doc Holliday participated in the famous shoot-out at the O.K. Corral, which was a showdown of two factions in Tombstone -- the Earps and the Clantons. Doc Holliday was wounded as a result, but recovered. His health was deteriorating, however, and went on to Glendwood, Colorado, where he died in bed at 35 years of age.
