Player Handout: Annie Oakley

Annie Oakley
1860-1926

Annie Oakley was a widely regarded marksperson, and a heroine to many. Her prowess at sharpshooting was demonstrated early in her life: she met her future husband, shooting champion Frank Butler, by defeating him in a match when she was only fifteen years of age. They toured as a team for some years until he retired to manage her career.

In 1884, she joined Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show, performing as a star for 16 years, until 1901, when a train accident ended her career. Even after that, she continued as an instructor, giving free shooting lessons to over two thousand women, and was widely known for her generous contributions to charities to benefit orphans, widows and young women seeking education.
